These paintings are formed around my own photographs of buildings, street views, and landscapes. But rather than becoming facsimiles of those places, these works sway into notions of abstraction. The photographs act as scaffolding, a useful tool only to be removed upon completion. The presence of the photos is a constant and pivotal source of inspiration, but ultimately, these paintings are constructions where the facts of representation have been blurred with my own perceptions and painting ideologies.

Shawn Evans was born (1986) in Regina, Saskatchewan, and maintains a connection to the city through representation at the Assiniboia Gallery. He received his undergraduate degree from the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, Alberta where he is also represented by VIVIANEART. His work has been exhibited across Canada and internationally. He now lives and works in Toronto, Ontario.
